India to become US

Recently I had a discussion with my friend. He was mentioning, “We are so much underpaid. If we were in US, we would have been getting 8 times more!” Adding to his points, “Same is the case with UK and other developed countries.” He has good knowledge about the economics. So supporting his comments on salaries, he added, “US has just 300 million people and still able to manage 14 trillion GDP and we (India) are more than 1.2 billion now and just have 1.2 trillion GDP.”## Then I said, “My friend, think in this way, India is managing its 1.2 billion population with GDP of 1.2 trillion where US need GDP of 14 trillion for its 300 million population! Who is better?” Here is the point where new perspective has come about India.

It’s true that India has the population of 1.2 billion and GDP of only 1.2 trillion whereas US can have DGP of 14 trillion with just 300 million people. And they are having such higher salary packages.

I asked him a single question: “What if in India, such high salary packages are being offered?” Forget about the capacity, it can be managed. But, going ahead what will happen? With higher salaries, we will spend more. But, with higher spending, demand of goods will increase, with same supply, so prices of the goods will go high. This leads to inflation. Government will try to buy more goods from other countries to fill the supply crunch. For that government need money. But remember, we have higher money to with us. So, government will go for higher taxes (as it is in US). And eventually with proper prices people will get things. But, still there is higher income. So people will buy more and at the end waste more (like US). And the whole cycle of high income and spending will turn in to higher GDP for India. And no doubt it will be more than US. India will become another US! Or may be bigger! Wow! That’s great! Then why not we are going in that way?

Now think from another side of demand supply chain. If India, like US, consumes more and wastes even more; then what will happen? Do resources in the globe have sufficient resources to supply this increased demand forever? And the answer is, NO. Currently, when we are managing with economy of 1.2 trillion and other ‘developed’ countries with higher GDP, are consuming more. With this scenario, the globe is facing very high resource crunch with other environmental problems.

Going that way will lead us nowhere. We have to reduce the resource usage. Currently, developed countries along with US have realized that high consumption should be controlled and should reduce the resources usage. In west, people are reducing their usage by “Going Green” and managing their life style with less money. And guess what, India is just doing that thing right now! In fact, it is pioneer in that.

So it is US who will follow India; not India to follow US.

## GDP – Gross Domestic Product – which generally means how much money a country is making and it is used to compare the countries’ economy

  3. If you are talking about Indians in US or people from other countries in US that are trying to lead a controlled lifestyle - you may be right. If you are talking about americans in america - i beg to differ. With the recession being a huge kick in the butt you would expect people to come to their senses but I hardly see that happening. What I truly believe America's problem is, is that they do not focus much on education. With no focus on education, people dont come out with a high skill set. Which obviously make them look at 'developing' countries for help(read cheap labour). And if you are saying that things in India are not heading that way - again i beg to disagree. We were a country where families used to be able to survive with a meager salary of 5000 a month 10-15 years back. Now the new generation cant imagine living and eating without atleast 20k a month with debts(speaking in general)which is why people try to keep job hopping against the previous generations trend where people have worked in organizations for 30 odd years.

  4. Like anonymous said 'i wish it were that simple'
As far as the salary issue goes. How much does an average american earn - lets say $5000 in a big city(this is on a higher side probably with multiple jobs)
This would sound like a fantastic salary for an Indian because he would be saving in rupees which is really good forex for our country.
But, for an american its jus $5000 which if spent during a jobless month in america would disappear in a matter of a month and a half. The same might sustain an Indian or a phillipino for a year(in their respective countries) if needed.
Like in India, there is a very small concentrated percentage who are millionaires. The american govt having now realized that they are incapacitated to take care of their citizens are now increasing the taxes. And please don't even get me started on the Indian Govt... We have a few upcoming politicians whom we make sure gets shot before their tenure starts. Power seems to lie in the hands of those that carry the cash and not the vote.
OMG... your post triggered so many random thoughts and I can just go on and on.. But ill stop for now...
    Happy blogging...

  5. I think I have touched somebody's nerve! Good for all as we all will get new points. And thanks for all insights.

Now before I say something on comments, let me clear my self: I am NOT saying that US is following India and Indians are not following US. Its just a view which shows what will happen when blindly Indians follows US (which is probably happening now - the salary example).

@Vatsal: Thanks for invitation. But I think I have not reached that level.

@Anu: For your first comment, thanks for bringing more problems with US. But if we make list, it will be a very long one. So lets keep these for now. My point was because of all problems with US, entire globe is facing problem which will eventually make them to conserve. If not now, later.

Job hopping and 20k a month is a scene at metros and that too some higher earning and spending people like me and probably person next to you. But that around 5% of population doesn't change the entire picture. People in India still living with 5k-8k a month and that is fact.

And where with 5000 rupees a month, if a person can spend whole month and also can save for future, with lower cost of life, 5000 USD can make you save in US also. And thanks to our 'great' politicians, We(Indians) don't wait for govt to save us unlike US.

  6. Thats an idealistic comment.. but im not here for arguement nor has a nerve been touched :) - idealists still form a very small percentage of our population.

  7. Dear sir,i m nt knwin much abt GDP bt a little i know is we can increase GDP without increasin prices nd with havin higher packages.
How bole to first thing we buy is an expensive house bt is it contributin in GDP? No. What if we buy land, pay taxes or buy old house nd renovate it? It wil add..
Secondary we buy services, and higher packages won't affect price of products as long as the govt. controls chances of monopoly. The consumption of single product wont b increased bez of customer's virtue of switching over. The US economy cant b compared to us bez they have totaly diff agenda and policies.
All we can do for our country is we must be self dependent in form of energy sources. The more we export and the less we import wil increase GDP.
Moreover increase the value of export goods nd decrease in tax slabs to make 20,30,50 percent wil atract people to invest more nd pay taxes.
Its true in india that if u dnt hav black money then u wil never gonna buy a bmw5,bez after taxes and expenses nothing is left in pocket dear.
We increase the package and at the same time the price of LUXURIOUS (undrstnd luxury only,nt basic needs) items is constant,so people wil buy them without affecting inflation. The same maruti wil b replaced by any sedan on road, makin living standard high.
The only thing we must learn is to spend money nt waste it. Money is nt gona be doubled when left unspent.
We r behind only bez of this mentality. Change it by increasin package and make people to b attracted to buy luxuries,be self dependent, decrease tax percent but increase num of slabs, increase exports production and there u r with high GDP with even 2 billion people..ENOUGH..

  8. @Gunjan: Very good knowledge about GDP I must say. Luxury takes us to high spending and high spending lead to high resource usage, without having with us. BMW will consume 1L petrol for running 7km where normal hatchback car will run around 15km and bike around 40-45km. Now running a BMW for some is spending and for other its wastage. If u dont have resources to buy, price will surely increase. (demand-supply gap)
